Fumar também aumenta o risco de desenvolver catarata, uma condição que turva a lente do olho, obscurecendo a visão. A fumaça do cigarro contribui para a formação de radicais livres nos olhos, que danificam as proteínas da lente e causam a catarata.

Além disso, a fumaça do cigarro pode causar ou piorar a síndrome do olho seco, uma condição desconfortável que ocorre quando os olhos não produzem lágrimas suficientes ou de qualidade adequada para manter os olhos lubrificados. A fumaça do cigarro irrita a superfície do olho e pode perturbar a produção de lágrimas.

O cigarro também está associado a uma maior probabilidade de desenvolvimento de glaucoma, uma doença que danifica o nervo óptico e pode levar à perda de visão se não for tratada.

Como médico, aconselho fortemente que qualquer pessoa que fuma considere parar por muitas razões, inclusive para proteger a saúde ocular.
