O que é a catarata?
A catarata é uma lesão ocular que torna a lente opaca e embaça a visão como se houvesse neblina na frente de seus olhos. Catarata é uma lesão ocular que afeta a opacidade da lente (a lente atrás da íris, cuja transparência permite que a luz passe por ela e chegue à retina para formar uma imagem), prejudicando assim a visão. A evolução costuma ser lenta, e a doença afeta um olho ou os dois ao mesmo tempo.
Como os raios luminosos não conseguem atingir plenamente a retina onde se situam os receptores fotossensíveis, o portador de catarata tem dificuldade para enxergar com nitidez.
No início do problema, a pessoa vê como se a lente dos óculos estivesse embaçada ou como se houvesse uma névoa diante dos olhos. Com o avanço da doença, porém, a dificuldade aumenta progressivamente e a pessoa passa a enxergar apenas vultos, evoluindo, às vezes, até a cegueira.
Outros sintomas que podem ocorrer são visão dupla, sensibilidade à luz ou imagens distorcidas. A pessoa pode queixar-se de dificuldade para dirigir, ler e andar, ou referir que tem tido quedas frequentes e que as cores estão desbotadas e sem vida. Pode perder, ainda, o interesse em ler e costurar porque não consegue enxergar direito.

Tipos
Catarata relacionada à idade
Também chamada de catarata senil, essa forma da doença ocorre por causa do envelhecimento. A catarata relacionada à idade é dividida em três tipos, dependendo de sua localização:
Cataratas nucleares
Se formam no centro da lente, tornando o núcleo do olho turvo ou opaco. O centro do olho pode ficar com uma coloração amarela ou castanha
Catarata cortical
Aparece na forma de cunha e em volta das extremidades do núcleo.
Catarata subcapsular posterior
Este tipo de catarata se forma mais rapidamente do que os outros dois tipos, e afeta a parte de trás da lente.
Catarata congênita
A catarata congênita está presente no nascimento ou se forma durante o primeiro ano de um bebê. Esse tipo é menos comum do que catarata relacionada à idade. Esse tipo de catarata nem sempre apresenta sintomas e pode ser removida se ela interfere com a visão do bebê. A catarata congênita pode se desenvolver se a mãe tiver uma infecção ou abusa de substância como drogas e álcool durante a gravidez. A catarata congênita ocorre em um a cada 5 mil nascimentos.
Catarata secundária
Cataratas secundárias são causadas por doenças ou medicamentos. As doenças que estão associadas ao desenvolvimento de cataratas incluem glaucoma e diabetes. O uso de medicamentos esteróides pode levar à catarata.
Catarata traumática
Cataratas traumáticas se desenvolvem após uma lesão no olho, embora possa levar vários anos após o evento para que isso aconteça.
